Carbon savings

Ground source heat pump installation costs in new build social housing are offset by the Renewable Heat Incentive, low running costs & lifetime ownership costs.

Developments in rural or off gas grid areas featuring ground source heat pumps benefit from reduced CO2 emissions and improved carbon compliance compared to traditional fuels.

Equally, in gas connected areas ground source heat pumps provide a carbon compliance solution without the need for supplementary carbon saving measures, such as solar PV.

Ownership Costs

While tenants will enjoy the benefit of low running costs, landlords will also appreciate low service and maintenance costs especially as the appliance can be easily accessed given its typical location outside the dwelling.

Protected either within the property itself – using Kensa’s unique Shoebox heat pump – or if externally located, within a weather-proof shelter, the ground source heat pump can be expected to provide a service life of at least 20 years.

Once installed, the borehole will remain in place for the lifetime of the building.

And because there is no fuel combustion, heat pumps require no annual safety inspection; while unlike some air source heat pumps, heat pumps are fully factory sealed meaning they require no annual F Gas inspection.

As such, lifetime ownership costs are far lower than any other technology, a benefit that can will accrue to the landlord.

Carbon savings

Updated in 2013 and covering the conservation of fuel and power, Building Regulations Part L are becoming increasingly stringent in the use of energy and CO2 emissions. By replacing a conventional fossil fuel based heating system with a ground source heat pump, higher levels of building efficiency and CO2 saving can be achieved.

CO2 emissions from new buildings are measured in SAP, most recently updated in 2012.  While electricity is considered a relatively carbon intensive fuel, the efficiency factor of a ground source heat pump reduces the emissions from space and water heating by up to two-thirds.
